ID-100220145Yes, I know. What a strange thing to write about the day before Thanksgiving. But I figured by this point in the week, everyone must be tired of reading about how everyone is thankful for the same things – family, friends, health, faith, prosperity, food, our freedoms, yada…yada…yada. How boring.

(That or you are traveling and won’t read this anyway.)

So, I’m taking a different route today with an A-Z list of blogging related things I’ve come to be most thankful for in the past year.

And yes, if you are wondering…I’m extremely thankful for all those things above as well.

A Blogging Thankfulness List

A – Alexa Ranking. I know this analytics service doesn’t offer a complete picture of how popular a blog is. However, it does keep me motivated as I see my rank continuing to fall.

B – Blog Carnivals. If you are not doing these on a consistent basis you are simply missing out on building some great links back to your site. Here is where I do mine.

C – Comment Luv. I love (haha) this plugin that many bloggers use in the comment section of their site. When you post a comment on a site, the plugin posts your most recent article underneath your comment. Not only does it get your most current post out there, you can see what others have written. I click on those links frequently to discover other blogger’s work.

D – Disqus. I chose this comment system for Luke1428 because of the login and account requirements. I felt that would ensure some quality discussions as only those serious about commenting would register. So far, I have not been disappointed (except that it doesn’t support Comment Luv).

E – Encouragement. I was not prepared for the level of support and encouragment I would receive from the blogging community. I thought it would be dog-eat-dog, with people criticizing one another in order to push their blog into prominence. I have not found that to be the case.

F – Facebook. Has been the best outlet for me to share posts with friends.

G – Genesis  Framework. Thank you Studiopress for building the bones of my website and creating themes so I didn’t have to. I could not have started blogging had I needed to do that myself.

H – Hootsuite. This is a management tool that can serve as a monitoring station for conversations on your social media platforms. Right now, I only use the free version as a scheduling tool for my posts.

I – Ideas. There is a great amount of quality ideas shared each day on so many different blogs. It’s really hard to keep up.

J – Jetpack. This is a must plugin for the beginner on WordPress. It helps with email, social media, comments, coding, widgets and a host of other blog issues.

K – Kingdom Messages. It’s very important for me to discuss my faith in God. It’s an intricate part of my life that I cannot ignore. This blog has given me an outlet to share those encouraging and inspiring message with others. I’ve dedicated writing one post a week, now called my Hidden Nuggets Series, that touches on a spiritual issue as it relates to money or life in general.

L – Link Checkers. Think of how many other sites you’ve linked to on the pages of your blog. The urls of those links change when the site owner makes an adjustment, thus rendering your link inoperative. A broken link checker plugin helps detect those quickly so you can make the necessary updates. (“L” Runner Up: LinkedIn)

M – Monetization. Even though I haven’t started this yet, I’m thankful the opportunity exists to profit from the hard work that goes into making this blog work.

N – Nrelate Related Content. This plugin helps readers navigate to other articles on your blog. It lists similar articles you’ve written at the end of each post that it believes readers might be interested in. It’s a simple plugin that can keep readers at your site longer and increase page views.

O – Opinions. Reader opinions help keep blogs alive. The blogs I enjoy reading the most have an active commenting community where people are bouncing ideas off one another and stimulating further conversation on the post topic.

P – Pinterest. I’m just scratching the surface with this and figuring out how to use it to my advantage. I’m only posting some of my better blog pictures there now with a link back to this site.

Q – Quitter. I’ve read so many bloggers longing to quit their day job so that they can blog full time. It’s their dream. If that’s you, then the book Quitter: Closing the Gap Between Your Day Job and Your Dream Job by Jon Acuff is the book you need to read – before you quit your job.

R – Ramsey. I know he is criticized in many personal finance circles for the simplicity of his ideas, but it was his message that got me started on this journey in the first place. Thanks Dave!

S – Spam Blockers. Holy Cow! Thank you Antispam Bee plugin for keeping that junk off my site.

T – Twitter. Has been the best outlet for me to connect with people I didn’t know.

U – Ugh! I hate writer’s block. I’m thankful that doesn’t happen often (but did here on this letter)

V – Views. I’m thankful my page views are increasing. I would be real discouraged if they were exactly the same from a year ago.

W – Widgets. These are small applications that serve a limited purpose and can be plugged in anywhere on a web page. Another tool to help those of us who can’t write code enhance the blog pages for the readers.

X – XML Sitemaps. I don’t really know how these work but they help search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing index your blog, assumingly to pull up appropriate articles from your site that people search for. That’s got to be a good thing, right?

Y – Yakezie Network. This is the personal finance and lifestyle bloggers network I’m currently challenging to join. It’s the largest of it’s kind on the web and has helped me makes some great connections with other like-minded bloggers.

Z – Zany posts like this. You just never know what creative posts you will find in the blog world from day to day.

Have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

What blogging related thing have you come to be thankful for? Can you fill in the “U” for me?
